Michael Dempsey, M.D. graduated from Brown University with a degree in Biology in 1979.
He subsequently attended the Harvard Medical School, where he received his MD degree in 1983.
After a residency in Internal Medicine at the George Washington University Hospital, Dr. Dempsey completed a fellowship in Endocrinology at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1988 where he participated in clinical and bench research. He then completed a one-year diabetes fellowship at the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston.
After the completion of his fellowships, Dr. Dempsey became a staff physician at the Joslin Diabetes Center. He was subsequently named an Instructor in Medicine at the Harvard Medical School. In 1989, he was selected to become the Medical Director of the Framingham Joslin Diabetes Clinic.
In 1991, Dr Dempsey left the Joslin Diabetes Center to join Dr Rodbard in the practice of clinical endocrinology.
Dr. Dempsey is a fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP).
He is a Past President of the Mid-Atlantic Regional Chapter of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (2017-2019).
Dr. Dempsey has served as the Endocrine Sub-section Chair at Suburban Hospital, the Medical Director of Diabetes Education at Suburban Hospital Johns Hopkins Medicine and the Medical Director of the Johns Hopkins Diabetes Course at Suburban Hospital.
Dr. Dempsey is the former Chair of the Community Outreach Committee of the Montgomery County Medical Society, as well as a former member of the Board of Directors of the Montgomery County Medical Society.
He's a past member of the Diabetes Disease State Network, the Public Impact Committe, and the Chapters Committee of national AACE.
He began a community based diabetes/endocrinology clinic treating under-served people with endocrine disorders in Montgomery County where he volunteered through March 2020.
Dr. Dempsey has lectured extensively regarding diabetes, male hyogonadism, and the medical treatment of obesity.
He has been a Principal Investigator or Sub-Investigator in more than 150 diabetes clinical trials.
